Scaling & Root Planing
In order to give your gums a chance to heal, we’ll need to remove any plaque and tartar that have accumulated on or around them. Scaling will let us clean away these harmful substances above and below the gumline. Then, to prevent them from building up again, the roots will be smoothed (or planed). Scaling and root planing can be used to treat both early gum disease (gingivitis) and advanced gum disease (periodontitis).
Arestin® Antibiotic Therapy
Even after a deep cleaning, harmful bacteria might still return to cause problems. That’s why we offer antibiotic therapy using Arestin antibiotics. This involves placing hundreds of tiny spheres into the pockets that are created when the infected gums recede away from the teeth. Over the course of a few days, the spheres slowly release the medication they contain to kill the bacteria. Because Arestin starts as a fine powder, it can reach the base of the pockets and treat areas beyond the scope of scaling and root planing.
Oraqix Topical Anesthetic
We want you to be able to stay comfortable while we’re performing a scaling procedure. To that end, we might use a special needle-free anesthetic called Oraqix. At room temperature, it takes the form of an oil so that we can topically apply it to any pockets that have formed in your gums. It will then solidify into a gel, holding itself in place and giving the anesthetic a chance to numb the area. The effect lasts about 20 minutes, and we can reapply the oil if necessary.
